Postdoctoral Researcher
IPK Gatersleben is a large, internationally recognized centre of plant research addressing problems of modern biology with an emphasis on crop plants. Our scientific expertise integrates a broad spectrum of disciplines to elucidate the mechanisms underlying processes of plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Our research aims at the generation of fundamental knowledge and the development of genetic and biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves cooperation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.
For the working group Genomics of Genetic Resources (GGR) we are looking for a
Postdoctoral Researcher
Employment could start from 15.10.2015 and is limited for a period of 24 months.
The group Genomics of Genetic Resources is contributing to the international efforts of sequencing the barley and wheat genomes - both among the most important crop species worldwide. We have developed extensive genomic resources and genomic tools to either discover, exploit or utilize genomic diversity for elucidation of mechanisms underlying plant characteristics or agronomic traits. Recently we could initiate a project aiming at the genotypic characterization of the entire barley genetic resources collection of IPK (>20,000 accessions) as a first step to provide improved information on genetic resources in order to underpin educated decisions of selecting genetic resources for allele mining or breeding interests.
Your tasks:
The candidate will be responsible for performing and coordinating the genotyping of a comprehensive collection of barley genetic resources at IPK Genebank. The collection comprises more than 20,000 individual accessions. The work includes acquiring samples from the central cold storage, grow the material and perform next-generation-sequencing based genotyping. The candidate will work in a larger interdisciplinary team with members focusing either on wet lab or bioinformatics tasks.
Your qualification:
You possess a PhD or equivalent academic degree. You have a strong background in molecular biology, experience in preparing NGS sequencing libraries and ideally you have direct experience on either handling HiSeq2500 sequencing devices or processing raw data from such instruments. You are familiar with plant DNA extraction and manipulation at high throughput. It is an advantage to have skills / experience in command line computing or at least the capability of performing data analysis tasks based on UNIX command line applications. You have good scientific writing skills and you are a team player.
