The Department of Applied Mechanics gives degree programs and conducts research in the disciplines of solid and fluid mechanics, and in their challenging application areas of aeronautical engineering and marine technology. Marine Technology concentrates on ship structures and strength, Arctic technology, ship hydrodynamics and safety of marine traffic. Analysis of advanced ship structures is one of the key research topics of Marine Technology group. The personnel concentrating on the advanced marine structures consist of two professors and altogether eight Post-Docs and doctoral students. The main research area for the future can be divided to the following topics:
Understanding the response and strength of advanced ship structures
Development of analysis methods for challenging application cases
The most important research area for these topics is a comprehensive understanding of the structural response and strength. In terms of response focus is on understanding complex structural systems such as passenger ships and steel sandwich panels. In strength assessment understanding the physical phenomena associated to fatigue, ultimate and collision strength are in the focus. For this group several 1+1 year post doc positions will be opened. The applicants should have experience on some of the following research areas:
Lightweight structures: composites, sandwich structures etc.
Limit state assessment for fatigue, ultimate or collision strength
Analytical, numerical and experimental analysis of structures
Optimization as part of structural analysis
