The role of this post is to execute the machine learning agenda of the centre for Cloud security with focus on developing methods for modelling cloud behaviour, and for detecting/predicting instances of abnormal behaviour and cloud crime. This will involve using knowledge extraction and visualisation techniques to transform and explain these predictions to collect evidence for their possible prosecution.
The newly formed research centre on Cloud security will seek to understand the different types of criminal behaviour that can be facilitated by the Cloud and then build systems that will allow the detection of such crimes and the collection of digital evidence to lead to the prosecution of Cloud-based criminals. The centre represents an inter-disciplinary research endeavour that will leverage the strengths of Newcastle, Durham and Leeds Universities in areas of computing systems security, artificial intelligence / machine learning, data mining, psychology, criminology, criminal justice, law, ethics and also and data analytics.
You will require a PhD or equivalent (or close to completion) in Machine Learning, Data Analysis or related discipline, and outstanding research outputs in machine learning and its applications. Experience and track record of working in inter-disciplinary collaborations is also essential, along with strong software development skills.

Main Purpose
To assist with the research of the EPSRC funded project "Combatting cRiminals In The CLoud" (Critical)
Main Duties and Responsibilities
1. Leading machine learning research activities within the newly formed EPSRC Centre for Cloud Security.
2. Playing a leading role in dissemination of machine learning and cloud-security research and impact activities for the EPSRC Centre for Cloud Security.
3. Working with local, national and international partners of the EPSRC Centre for Cloud Security in the development and delivery of effective methods and systems for detection, prosecution, and prevention of cloud crime.
4. Contributing to system development for building an effective framework for detection, prosecution, and prevention of cloud crime.
5. Contributing to the supervision and undertaking day-to-day management of postgraduate students at Newcastle University’s School of Computing Science.
6. Leading and contributing to new machine learning project funding applications.
7. Contributing to the coordination of the School of Computing Science, Open Lab/ICOS/Secure & Resilient Systems Research Group, and the Centre’s research network of academic, commercial, government and third sector collaborators.
8. Initiating and developing research collaborations on behalf of the Centre with researchers from disciplines other than computer science. Contributing to University, School of Computing Science, the ICOS/Open Lab/Secure & Resilient Systems research group, and the Centre’s public engagement activities (including School and University open days).
