Approximate Search Techniques for Big data Analyses - NISLAB

The Norwegian Information Security Laboratory (NISlab) is one of Europe’s largest academic research groups in cyber security. NISlab covers a large part of the cyber security field, including crypto, critical infrastructure protection, cyber defence, and computational forensics, biometrics, and information security management. NISlab is actively embedded in the global research community and has English as its working language. NISlab operates Scandinavia’s only Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. programmes dedicated solely to information security. The laboratory collaborates closely with national security, defence and law enforcement authorities, and has been selected to lead a national research school in information security.

NISlab is a section of the Faculty of Computer Science and Media Technology at Gjøvik University College (GUC), located about an hour from Norway’s main international airport. GUC is a modern, research-focused institution with around 3000 students and 320 employees from 25 different nationalities. Innovation and value creation constitute GUC’s institutional pillar and are incorporated in all its study programs.

Norway is a modern and prosperous nation at the top of the Human Development Index and most other ranking lists related to democracy, transparency, quality of life and equal rights and is becoming increasingly multi-cultural. See www.visitnorway.com.

The NISlab invites excellent candidates to apply for a Ph.D. studentship funded for 36 months to conduct research related to defining algorithms capable of searching for various objects (typically strings, but also other kinds of objects such as images) in very large databases, where some tolerance is allowed.

Qualifications

Successful candidates for the position will have

Background in Computer Science, Mathematics, or related field
Strong abilities in modeling and analysis of algorithms
Experience in programming and software development suitable for concept and prototype development and simulations
Ideally relevant background in network security and/or digital forensics.
Excellent written and good oral English communication skills

Ph.D. candidates must also hold a M.Sc. in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field equivalent to a distinction-level Norwegian 2-year research M.Sc. (120 ECTS); candidates will be able to enroll in the Information Security or Computer Science doctoral programs at GUC and can also participate in the COINS research school (https://www.coinsrs.no).

Job description

The focus of the Ph.D. candidate’s research will be primarily on the design and analysis of algorithms for approximate (tolerant) search for objects in very large data sets. These algorithms are to be applied in various environments, such as data sources captured in criminal investigation cases or databases of known attack signatures in intrusion detection systems (IDS). The grant will be offered to the successful candidate for a period of 3 years, where 100% of this time is assigned to the Ph.D. study and research. Office location will be in Gjøvik.

Admission to a Ph.D programme is a condition for employment in a research fellow position. Admission to a Ph.D programme and final plan for the research education must be approved and contractual no later than 3 – three – months after employment.

Starting date
Starting date for the position is as soon as possible.
