PostDoc or PhD position on Dynamic Maintenance Planning in Maritime Supply Chains

Job description
This research position is part of the Dinalog funded project “Integrated Maintenance and Service Logistics Concepts for Maritime Assets”. In this project, we focus on developing innovative concepts to improve the predictability of maintenance and service logistics demand on the one hand, and developing smart concepts of service logistics optimization, supply chain coordination and cooperation on the other hand. Four full-time researchers will be positioned within this project. This position deals with developing methods to construct dynamic maintenance plans proceeding from condition monitoring information and taking into account planned system deployment in the next period of (say) one year. The resulting plan includes a specification of required resources (service engineers, tools, spare parts) for a given system. The maintenance plan covers primarily the logistics aspects, rather than the technical specifications, of decisions regarding (i) on-site or off-site repair, (ii) corrective versus preventive maintenance (time based, use based, or condition based), (iii) planning maintenance tasks in time taking into account scale effects in maintenance set-up (clustering of maintenance activities). Rules for taking advantage of opportunity-based maintenance will be included. Organizations involved in this work package are a.o. the Royal Netherlands Navy (asset owner), Thales Netherlands (OEM), and ImTech Marine (system integrator and service provider). As a researcher, you will collaborate closely with these industrial partners.

Requirements
You have at least a master’s degree in a relevant field, such as industrial engineering, applied mathematics, or econometrics. As a PostDoc, you also have a PhD degree in a similar relevant field. You are able to develop stochastic operations research models for dynamic maintenance planning. Also, you can embed these models in prototype decisions support tools to enable testing and implementation in practice (e.g. based on Delphi). You are able to work both independently as well as in a project team, and you have good communicative skills. You are fluent in English.

Conditions of employment
We offer a very challenging position in an inspiring environment. This position can either be filled as a PostDoc project, or as a PhD project. As a PostDoc you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of three years (38 hours a week), The salary is based on the job profile Researcher level 4 (under the University System for Job Classification (UJC)) and will be in the range of € 2427,- to € 3831,- per month. As a PhD candidate you will be appointed in a full-time position for a period of four years (38 hours a week), leading to a dissertation. The gross monthly salary for a PhD increases from € 2083,- in the first year to € 2664,- in the final year. The gross monthly salary will be in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities and depends on your experience.
