Postdoc for Magnetocaloric Heat Pumps

Technical University of Denmark (DTU)
Postdoc
for Magnetocaloric Heat Pumps

Do you want to help develop innovative and environmentally friendly energy technologies for the future?

DTU Energy Conversion has received funding from the Danish Strategic Research Council for a large project on research, development and implementation of magnetocaloric heat pumps. The project, “Efficient Novel Magnetocaloric Heat Pumps” (ENOVHEAT), brings together five Danish and foreign universities as well as two Danish and two German companies. The project will employ four PhD students and two postdocs (see www.enovheat.dk).

We are seeking a motivated postdoc for the design and construction of such a heat pump. This is a complex task bringing together heat and mass transfer, magnetic properties and system design. Regenerators made from a magnetocaloric material will heat up in the presence of a magnetic field. An efficient transfer of this heat between the solid material inside the regenerator, the fluid running through it and the heat exchangers of the system is essential for the performance of a magnetocaloric heat pump. Each of the PhD and postdoc projects in ENOVHEAT will work together towards the common goal of understanding and optimising the many elements of a magnetocaloric heat pump. A goal of the project is to construct a proof-of-concept heat pump capable of producing 2 kW heating.

Job description
In this three-year postdoc project your main task will be to bring together the many results from the other projects and use this knowledge to design and realise a magnetocaloric heat pump. You will work with custom designed permanent magnet assemblies and advanced magnetocaloric materials in optimised shapes. Heat and flow management in the system will be a central area as these are very important for the efficiency of the heat pump.

Qualifications

PhD degree in engineering, physics or similar.
Experience with heat and mass transfer and machine design.
Preferably interest in and experience with numerical modelling
Ability to work independently, to plan and carry out complicated tasks, and to be a part of a large, dynamical group.
Good communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for postdocs. The period of employment is 3 years.

The expected starting date is July 1st 2014, or earlier.
